The tree of longan is closely affiliated to the more illustrious lychee and the fruit is often called the little brother of lychee. In Chinese, it is called the Dragon’s Eye since its black pit contains a small white spot in the centre and shows through the translucent flesh.

Like lychee, the longan fruit grows in drooping clusters. It is round in shape, 1/2 to 1 inch in diameter. The skin is thin and rough, with smaller protrusions than lychee, yellow-brown to reddish-brown in color. Beneath the skin is the edible part, the flesh, which is soft, mushy, whitish and translucent.

The flesh of the fruit is deliciously sweet, juicy and succulent. It is eaten fresh as well as used in many Southeast and East Asian dishes as snacks, appetizers or desserts. It is often an essential part of most sweet and sour dishes.
